About this book

Oxford Primary Mathematics, Students’ Course Book 5 (Updated Edition) is the Class 5 maths textbook of the Army Public Schools & Colleges System. It is published by Oxford University Press Pakistan, with Dr Foong Pui Yee as consultant and author and Chang Suo Hui, Lim Li Gek Pearlyn and Wong Oon Hua as authors. The cover shows wind turbines on a green hillside and a large blue 5. Available to order now for the 2027-28 session.

Class 5 maths is the bridge to secondary school. Numbers rise to ten million, the child meets HCF and LCM, learns to add, subtract, multiply and divide unlike fractions and mixed numbers, and then moves to ratio, decimals, percentage, averages and the unitary method. The Course Book handles that load in its familiar Oxford pattern: chapter opener, In Focus questions, Let’s Learn, Activity Time and Practice.

Table of contents (Chapters 1 to 9, as photographed)

Every lesson of the Course Book’s contents pages is listed below with its page number, followed by what it gives the child.

Chapter 1: Numbers up to 10 Million

  • 1. Number up to 10 Million (p. 2)
  • 2. Divisibility Rules for 7 and 11 (p. 7)
  • 3. Prime and Composite Numbers (p. 8)
  • 4. Number Patterns (p. 10)
  • 5. Highest Common Factor (HCF) (p. 11)
  • 6. Least Common Multiple (LCM) (p. 13)
  • 7. Square and Cube Numbers (p. 14)

Why it helps: Seven-digit numbers, divisibility rules, HCF and LCM and square and cube numbers make this a rich chapter of number theory that supports all later work with fractions.

Chapter 2: Four Operations

  • 1. Add and Subtract up to 6-Digit Numbers (p. 17)
  • 2. Multiplying by Tens, Hundreds, Thousands, and by 3-Digit Numbers (p. 19)
  • 3. Dividing by Tens, Hundreds, Thousands, and by 2-Digit Numbers (p. 26)
  • 4. Solving Real-Life Stories (p. 30)

Why it helps: Multiplication by three-digit numbers and long division by two-digit numbers are the arithmetic skills tested most often in Class 5 exams.

Chapter 3: Algebra

  • 1. Using Letters for Unknown Quantities (p. 35)

Why it helps: A single lesson that develops the idea from Class 4: using a letter for an unknown and solving for it.

Chapter 4: Fractions

  • 1. Fractions (p. 40)
  • 2. Comparing and Ordering Fractions (p. 42)
  • 3. Adding Unlike Fractions and Mixed Numbers (p. 46)
  • 4. Subtracting Unlike Fractions and Mixed Numbers (p. 50)
  • 5. Multiplying a Mixed Number and a Whole Number (p. 54)
  • 6. Multiplying Two/Three Fractions (p. 56)
  • 7. Dividing a Fraction by a Fraction (p. 59)
  • 8. Solving Real-Life Stories (p. 63)

Why it helps: The biggest chapter in the first half: unlike fractions, mixed numbers and all four operations, completed with real-life problems.

Chapter 5: Ratio

  • 1. Ratio (p. 69)
  • 2. Equivalent Ratios (p. 73)
  • 3. Solving Real-Life Stories (p. 77)

Why it helps: Ratio is the new idea of Class 5, used in recipes, maps and scale drawings.

  • 1. Fractions and Decimals (p. 82)
  • 2. Comparing and Ordering Decimals (p. 85)
  • 3. Adding and Subtracting Decimals (p. 87)

  • 5. Division of Decimals (p. 93)
  • 6. Order of Operations (p. 96)
  • 7. Converting Measurements: Distance/Length, Mass, and Capacity (p. 97)
  • 8. Rounding Decimals (p. 102)
  • 9. Solving Real-Life Stories (p. 104)
  • 10. Conversion of Units of time (p. 106)

Why it helps: Ten lessons connect decimals to fractions and to measurement, and include the order of operations (BODMAS).

Chapter 7: Percentage

  • 1. Percent (p. 111)
  • 2. Finding a Percentage Part of a Whole (p. 118)

  • 1. Understanding Rate/Unitary Method (p. 133)
  • 2. Solving Real-Life Stories (p. 136)

Why it helps: Finding the value of one unit, to solve problems of speed, price and work.
