About this book

Cambridge Global English APSACS Edition, Learner’s Book 5 (Third edition) is the Class 5 English coursebook of the Army Public Schools & Colleges System. It is published by Cambridge University Press and written by Jane Boylan and Claire Medwell. The purple cover shows children in green uniforms lifting a globe, with the line ‘Based on National Curriculum of Pakistan 2022, 2026 edition’. Class 5 is the last primary year, and this is the book that gets the child ready for the secondary English course. Available to order now for the 2027-28 session.

Cambridge Global English is a six-stage primary English course, and Stage 5 is the point at which children are expected to read longer texts, write multi-paragraph pieces and speak with growing accuracy. Learner’s Book 5 is built around nine thematic units, with review spreads between them and a section of Single National Curriculum (SNC) themes at the back, which is how the APSACS edition connects the international course to the Pakistani syllabus.

The nine units of Class 5 English

Each unit of the Learner’s Book combines vocabulary, grammar, reading, writing, listening and speaking, links to other school subjects, phonics or word study, and critical thinking and values. The Class 5 Activity Book, which follows the Learner’s Book unit by unit, lists the nine unit titles below.

Unit 1: Talking about people

Why it helps: Describing people, writing a profile and carrying out an interview. Children practise adjectives, questions and the structure of a short biography, which are the basic building blocks for the whole year.

Unit 2: Staying healthy

Why it helps: Illnesses, fever, food and health, health blogs and the folk tale Stone Soup. Health vocabulary is useful in daily life, and the unit adds blog writing and a traditional story.

Unit 3: Where we live

Why it helps: Describing places, our carbon footprint, past and present, favourite fictional places and the story The Lost City. Children learn to describe a place in detail and to link English with geography and environmental care.

Unit 4: Celebrations

Why it helps: Describing celebrations, the Rio Carnival, personal celebrations and a Horrid Henry birthday party. A unit about festivals gives every child something to write about from their own culture.

Unit 5: Famous people

Why it helps: Professions, famous people and their work, a presentation, a short biography and extracts from The Stowaway. Children learn to research and present a person’s life.

Unit 6: Myths and fables

Why it helps: Myths and legends, fables, telling an anecdote, lessons in life and The Lambton Worm. Traditional stories teach narrative structure and moral thinking.

Unit 7: Ancient civilizations

Why it helps: Ancient Egypt and Rome, the pyramids, everyday life in ancient times, discoveries and the story There’s a Pharaoh in Our Bath! History becomes a topic for reading and writing in English.

Unit 8: Weather and climate

Why it helps: Describing the weather, rainforests, extreme weather, rainforest animals and the poems A Visit with Mr Tree Frog and If I Were a Sloth. Science vocabulary and poetry sit side by side.

Unit 9: Planet Earth

Why it helps: Food chains, animal camouflage, looking after pets, writing a leaflet and the story Mum Won’t Let Me Keep a Rabbit. The year ends with ecology, persuasion and a letter-style leaflet.

About the detailed contents table

Like the other Learner’s Books in the series, Book 5 prints a wide contents grid (words and expressions, use of English, reading and writing, listening and speaking, school subjects, word study, critical thinking and values) with the page range of every unit, followed by the SNC themes grid. We do not have a clear photograph of that grid for Book 5, so we list the units above rather than guess at the details. If you need the exact page ranges and grammar points before ordering, message us on WhatsApp and we will check our copy and reply.
