Hello World Kids, Book 5 is the Class 5 computer book of the Army Public Schools & Colleges System. The cover has the series’ friendly green and red characters, the line ‘Let’s learn coding!’ and the slogan ‘A world of possibilities’. This is a real programming book: it teaches Small Basic, a simple text-based language designed for beginners, through turtle drawing, colours and shapes. Available to order now for the 2027-28 session.
What makes Book 5 special is its ‘Who Is Who?’ lessons, which end each of the first three units with a short profile of a famous technology person: Steve Jobs, Jehan Ara and Monis Rahman. They show a ten-year-old that technology is made by real people, including Pakistanis.
Full table of contents: Units 1 to 4, every lesson and page
The contents page lists three units of five lessons and a unit of five challenges. Every entry is given as printed.
Unit One: Hello Small Basic (page 7)
- Lesson 1: Objects Around Me (p. 8)
- Lesson 2: Welcome To Small Basic (p. 10)
- Lesson 3: Turtle… Move and Turn (p. 16)
- Lesson 4: Turtle… Hurry up and draw more (p. 19)
- Lesson 5: Who Is Who? Steve Jobs (p. 21)
Why it helps: The unit begins with the idea of objects, then introduces the Small Basic window. The turtle that moves and turns teaches sequence and angles, and the first ‘Who Is Who?’ tells the story of Steve Jobs.
Unit Two: Hello GraphicsWindow (page 29)
- Lesson 1: GraphicsWindow is an Object (p. 31)
- Lesson 2: GraphicsWindow is Colorful! (p. 32)
- Lesson 3: My Pen’s Width (p. 33)
- Lesson 4: Random Colors Trick (p. 34)
- Lesson 5: Who Is Who? Jehan Ara (p. 35)
Why it helps: The GraphicsWindow is where the child’s drawings appear. Setting colours, pen width and random colours gives immediate visual results, and the second profile introduces Jehan Ara.
Unit Three: Hello Shapes (page 41)
- Lesson 1: My Colorful Shapes (p. 42)
- Lesson 2: My Shapes’ Location (p. 45)
- Lesson 3: Move My Shape (p. 47)
- Lesson 4: Meet Mr. Line! (p. 49)
- Lesson 5: Who Is Who? Monis Rahman (p. 50)
Why it helps: Drawing shapes, placing them using coordinates and moving them connects programming to the maths of position. The third profile is of Monis Rahman.
Unit Four: Challenges (page 55)
- Challenge 1: The Maze (p. 56)
- Challenge 2: Humpty Dumpty (p. 57)
- Challenge 3: The Binary Numbers (p. 58)
- Challenge 4: The Magic Triangle (p. 59)
- Challenge 5: My Garden (p. 60)
Why it helps: The five challenges combine everything learned so far. Binary numbers introduce how computers store information, and ‘My Garden’ is a creative project to finish.
