About this book

Oxford Primary Mathematics, Students’ Course Book 4 (Updated Edition) is the Class 4 maths textbook of the Army Public Schools & Colleges System. It is published by Oxford University Press Pakistan, with Dr Foong Pui Yee as consultant and author and Lim Li Gek Pearlyn and Wong Oon Hua as authors. The green cover shows five dice, three white and two green. Available to order now for the 2027-28 session.

Class 4 is a big step up. Numbers rise to 100 000, multiplication and division reach two-digit numbers, factors and multiples, prime numbers, a full chapter of fractions (including multiplying and dividing them), percent, and the first taste of algebra all appear in a single year. The Course Book handles that load with its familiar Oxford pattern: chapter opener, In Focus questions, Let’s Learn, Activity Time and Practice.

Table of contents (Chapters 1 to 6, as photographed)

Every lesson of the Course Book’s contents page is listed below with its page number, followed by what it gives the child.

Chapter 1: Numbers to 100 000

  • 1. Numbers Up to 100 000 (p. 2)
  • 2. Comparing and Ordering Numbers (p. 5)
  • 3. Number Patterns (p. 8)
  • 4. Roman Numerals (p. 12)
  • 5. Rounding Numbers (p. 14)

Why it helps: Five-digit numbers extend the place-value ladder, and Roman numerals and rounding are reviewed at the new size.

Chapter 2: Four Operations

  • 1. Addition, Subtraction, and Estimation (p. 19)
  • 2. Multiplying by a 1-Digit Number (p. 22)
  • 3. Multiplying by a 2-Digit Number (p. 25)
  • 4. Dividing by a 1-Digit Number (p. 28)
  • 5. Solving Real-Life Stories (p. 33)

Why it helps: The core arithmetic chapter. Two-digit multiplication and division by one digit are the skills most tested in Class 4.

Chapter 3: Factors and Multiples

  • 1. Divisibility by 2, 3, 5, and 10 (p. 38)
  • 2. Factors (p. 39)
  • 3. Prime and Composite Numbers (p. 42)
  • 4. Multiples (p. 45)

Why it helps: Divisibility rules save time in calculation, and prime and composite numbers open the door to number theory.

Chapter 4: Fractions

  • 1. Converting Fractions (p. 49)
  • 2. Comparing and Ordering Fractions (p. 53)
  • 3. Adding Fractions (p. 57)
  • 4. Subtracting Fractions (p. 59)
  • 5. Fraction of a Set (p. 61)
  • 6. Multiplying a Fraction and a Whole Number (p. 64)
  • 7. Multiplying Two Fractions (p. 68)
  • 8. Dividing a Fraction by a Whole Number (p. 72)
  • 9. Percent (p. 74)

Why it helps: Nine lessons, the longest chapter in the book, take fractions from converting and comparing all the way to multiplying, dividing and percent.

Chapter 5: Introduction to Algebra

  • 1. Using Letters for Unknown Quantities (p. 77)

Why it helps: A single, gentle lesson on using a letter such as x for an unknown, which prepares the child for algebra in middle school.

Chapter 6: Symmetry

  • 1. Completing Symmetrical Figures (p. 80)

Why it helps: Completing symmetrical figures develops spatial thinking.

Later chapters

Our photographs of the Course Book’s contents show Chapters 1 to 6. The companion Practice Workbook for Class 4 lists four more chapters: Chapter 7, Lines and Angles; Chapter 8, Square, Rectangle, and Circle; Chapter 9, Decimals (I); and Chapter 10, Decimals (II). If you want the Course Book page numbers for those chapters, message us before you order and we will confirm them.
