About this book

Know Your World, Book 4 (Third Edition) is the Class 4 social studies textbook of the Army Public Schools & Colleges System. It is written by Farhat Mansoob and published by Oxford University Press Pakistan, and the cover (a blue sky over a rugged mountain range) says ‘For Grade 4’. According to the publisher, the book takes children on a journey through Pakistan to explore its culture, geography and history, and introduces global citizenship, the state and government, and economics. Available to order now for the 2027-28 session.

It is a book that asks a nine-year-old to look up from the desk: to think about what rights and responsibilities they have, how people live differently, how a country is governed, where Pakistan came from, what its mountains and rivers are like and why people need goods and services.

Full table of contents: Units 1 to 6, every chapter and page

The contents are printed as a table of units, chapters and pages. Every entry is given exactly as printed.

Unit 1: Citizenship

  • Chapter 1.1: The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizens (p. 1)
  • Chapter 1.2: Human Rights (p. 4)
  • Chapter 1.3: Harmony (p. 6)
  • Chapter 1.4: Communication (p. 10)

Why it helps: The first unit starts with the child as a citizen. Rights and responsibilities go together, and learning about human rights, living in harmony and communicating well gives a child the language of fairness before they meet the harder history and geography.

Unit 2: Culture and Diversity

  • Chapter 2.1: Importance of Culture (p. 15)
  • Chapter 2.2: Diversity (p. 20)

Why it helps: Pakistan’s regions, languages and customs are rich and varied. This unit helps children see diversity as a strength and learn why culture matters.

Unit 3: State and Government

  • Chapter 3.1: State and Government (p. 28)

Why it helps: A single chapter explains what a state is and what a government does, a good first introduction to civics before Class 5.

Unit 4: History

  • Chapter 4.1: History (p. 31)
  • Chapter 4.2: Early History of Pakistan (p. 36)

Why it helps: History starts with what history is and how we know about the past, then moves to the early history of Pakistan, so the child builds a timeline in their head.

Unit 5: Geography

  • Chapter 5.1: Maps and Globes (p. 40)
  • Chapter 5.2: Physical Features of Pakistan (p. 46)
  • Chapter 5.3: Impact of Physical Environment (p. 52)
  • Chapter 5.4: Population (p. 61)

Why it helps: The longest unit. Maps and globes teach the child to read the world; physical features cover Pakistan’s mountains, plains, rivers and deserts; the impact of the environment explains how landscape shapes life; and population introduces people as part of geography.

Unit 6: Economics

  • Chapter 6.1: Needs and Resources (p. 67)
  • Chapter 6.2: Goods and Services (p. 71)

Why it helps: Needs, resources, goods and services are the first economics lessons. They explain, in plain language, why people work and trade.

Glossary (page 76)

  • Glossary (p. 76)

Why it helps: The glossary at the back lists key terms and concepts, so a child can revise the meaning of any word in the book.

Features that help students

According to Oxford University Press Pakistan, the book is built on well-researched content with illustrations, images, maps, graphs, timelines and flow charts; assessments that measure progress and encourage active learning; informational snippets in each chapter; research-based projects; and a glossary of key terms. These features help a child move beyond memorising to understanding, in line with the book’s aim of building creativity, critical thinking and analytical skills.

Who, when and how

The book is for Class 4 students at Army Public Schools, used in the social studies lesson through the year. At home, a map or globe on the table, a family conversation about what makes a good citizen and a trip to a local museum or monument bring the chapters to life.
