Hello World Kids, Book 4 is the Class 4 computer book of the Army Public Schools & Colleges System. The blue cover shows the series’ friendly green and red characters at a computer, the line ‘Let’s learn coding!’, the slogan ‘A world of possibilities’ and the website helloworldkids.org. This is the first book of the series that puts coding on the cover, together with spreadsheets. Available to order now for the 2027-28 session.
Where Books 1 to 3 introduced the computer, drawing and documents, Book 4 moves on to Microsoft Excel, the logic of programming and spreadsheet functions and charts, topics that give a nine-year-old real, usable skills.
Full table of contents: Units 1 to 4, every lesson and page
The contents page lists four units. Three have five lessons each; the fourth is a set of five Challenges. Every entry is given as printed.
Unit One: Hello MS Excel (page 7)
- Lesson 1: Hello Worksheets (p. 8)
- Lesson 2: Hello Editing (p. 12)
- Lesson 3: Hello Rows and Columns (p. 15)
- Lesson 4: Hello Workbooks (p. 18)
- Lesson 5: Hello Formulas (p. 20)
Why it helps: Excel is introduced step by step: a worksheet, editing cells, rows and columns, a workbook, and finally formulas. Formulas are the point at which a child sees that a computer can calculate for them.
Unit Two: Hello Programming (page 25)
- Lesson 1: Little Programmers Around the World (p. 26)
- Lesson 2: Computer, Who Are You? (p. 28)
- Lesson 3: Programming Parties (p. 30)
- Lesson 4: Ordering My Computer (p. 34)
- Lesson 5: Sneak Peek to the Future… Smart House (p. 36)
Why it helps: This unit introduces what programming is without needing a keyboard full of code. ‘Ordering My Computer’ teaches that a computer follows instructions in sequence, and ‘Smart House’ shows where programming leads.
Unit Three: Hello Spreadsheets (page 41)
- Lesson 1: Hello Functions 1 (p. 42)
- Lesson 2: Hello Functions 2 (p. 45)
- Lesson 3: Hello Number Formats (p. 48)
- Lesson 4: Hello Charts (p. 51)
- Lesson 5: Hello Outputs (p. 54)
Why it helps: Functions, number formats and charts are the practical core of spreadsheets. Making a chart from a table is a skill children use in maths and science as well.
Unit Four: Challenges (page 59)
- Challenge 1: Reddo’s Spreadsheet (p. 60)
- Challenge 2: The Smart Analyzer (p. 61)
- Challenge 3: The Animals Table (p. 62)
- Challenge 4: I am a problem solver (p. 63)
- Challenge 5: The “Codecracker” (p. 64)
Why it helps: Five one-page challenges apply everything learned so far. They are puzzles with a purpose, and are a good test of whether a child has really understood the units.
Who, when and where
