Oxford Primary Mathematics, Students’ Course Book 3 (Updated Edition) is the Class 3 maths textbook of the Army Public Schools & Colleges System. It is published by Oxford University Press Pakistan, with Dr Foong Pui Yee as consultant and author and Lim Li Gek Pearlyn and Wong Oon Hua as authors. The cover shows two orange-and-white traffic cones with a large orange 3. Available to order now for the 2027-28 session.
Class 3 is the year in which multiplication tables and long division arrive, and when fractions grow from halves and quarters to proper fractions, improper fractions and mixed numbers. The Course Book uses the same Oxford pattern as the earlier classes (chapter opener, In Focus questions, Let’s Learn, Activity Time, Practice), so a child who used Course Books 1 and 2 will feel at home.
Table of contents (Chapters 1 to 7, as photographed)
Every lesson of the contents pages is listed below with its page number.
Chapter 1: Numbers to 10 000
- 1. Counting to 10 000 (p. 2)
- 2. Place Value (p. 5)
- 3. Comparing and Ordering Numbers (p. 7)
- 4. Rounding Numbers (p. 12)
- 5. Number Patterns (p. 14)
- 6. Odd and Even Numbers (p. 16)
- 7. Roman Numerals (p. 17)
Why it helps: Thousands, hundreds, tens and ones: a child who understands this place-value ladder can handle every calculation in the rest of the book. Rounding and Roman numerals are included here, early.
Chapter 2: Addition and Subtraction Within 10 000
- 1. Addition (p. 19)
- 2. Subtraction (p. 24)
- 3. Estimation (p. 30)
- 4. Solving Real-Life Stories (p. 31)
Why it helps: Larger sums with regrouping, estimation as a sense-check, and word problems that show where this arithmetic is used in daily life.
Chapter 3: Multiplication and Division
- 1. Multiplication Tables of 6, 7, 8, and 9 (p. 36)
- 2. Multiplying with Regrouping (p. 48)
- 3. Division (p. 50)
- 4. Dividing Without Regrouping (p. 53)
- 5. Dividing With Regrouping (p. 56)
- 6. Quotient and Remainder (p. 60)
- 7. Solving Real-Life Stories (p. 61)
Why it helps: The longest chapter, and the most important of the year. The hard tables (6, 7, 8 and 9) are followed by multiplying with regrouping, then division in three stages, ending with quotient and remainder.
Chapter 4: Length
- 1. Length in Metres and Centimetres (p. 65)
- 2. Length in Kilometres and Metres (p. 68)
Why it helps: Distances people actually travel (kilometres) join the metres and centimetres from Class 2.
Chapter 5: Mass
- 1. Mass in Kilograms and Grams (p. 71)
Why it helps: A single lesson that combines kilograms and grams, with conversions.
Chapter 6: Capacity
- 1. Capacity in Millilitres (p. 74)
- 2. Capacity in Litres and Millilitres (p. 76)
Why it helps: Millilitres are introduced for small quantities, then combined with litres.
Chapter 7: Fractions
- 1. Proper Fractions, Improper Fractions, and Mixed Numbers (p. 79)
- 2. Comparing and Ordering Fractions (p. 82)
- 3. Equivalent Fractions (p. 84)
- 4. Adding Fractions (p. 89)
- 5. Subtracting Fractions (p. 91)
- 6. More About Fractions (p. 92)
Why it helps: Fractions get six lessons, from naming the kinds of fraction to equivalent fractions and adding and subtracting them. This is the preparation Class 4 needs.
Later chapters
Our photographs of the Course Book’s contents show Chapters 1 to 7. The companion Practice Workbook for Class 3 lists five more chapters: Chapter 8, Time and Temperature (telling time to the minute, duration of time); Chapter 9, Geometry (lines, circle, angles and polygons, right angles, movement, prisms and pyramids); Chapter 10, Area and Perimeter; Chapter 11, Symmetrical Figures; and Chapter 12, Data Representation and Probability (Carroll diagram), followed by a Math Lab Activity and a Glossary. Message us before you order if you need the Course Book page numbers for those chapters.
