About this book

Adventures in Science, Student Book 4 is the Class 4 science textbook of the Army Public Schools & Colleges System, and the cover states it is ‘Based on National Curriculum 2022’. It shows an astronaut floating beside a space shuttle, two giraffes, and a hand holding a small plant in soil, a fair picture of a book that stretches from living things to space. Available to order now for the 2027-28 session.

Eleven chapters cover the whole of Class 4 science: life processes, plants and animals, first aid, ecosystems, matter, energy, forces and simple machines, technology, the Earth and its resources, and the solar system. The chapter titles speak to a ten-year-old’s curiosity, and the sequence moves from the child’s own body outward to the planet and beyond.

Full table of contents: Chapters 1 to 11

The contents list eleven chapters with their starting pages. Each is given here exactly as printed, with a note on what it gives the student.

Chapter 1: Life Processes

  • Life Processes (p. 1)

Why it helps: The book begins with the characteristics of living things: how they move, grow, breathe and reproduce. It gives the child the questions that the rest of biology answers.

Chapter 2: Plant Structure and Function

  • Plant Structure and Function (p. 10)

Why it helps: Roots, stems, leaves and flowers, and what each does. This chapter is the basis for every later lesson on food and ecosystems.

Chapter 3: Animal Structure and Function

  • Animal Structure and Function (p. 27)

Why it helps: How animals’ bodies are suited to what they do: eating, moving, sensing and protecting themselves.

Chapter 4: First Aid

  • First Aid (p. 41)

Why it helps: A short practical chapter. Knowing what to do for a cut, burn or nosebleed is a life skill, and it is part of the Class 4 science course.

Chapter 5: Ecosystem – Adaptations

  • Ecosystem – Adaptations (p. 46)

Why it helps: How living things fit their habitat: desert, forest, sea. Adaptation is one of the most important ideas in biology, and it appears here early.

Chapter 6: Matter and Its Characteristics

  • Matter and Its Characteristics (p. 57)

Why it helps: Solids, liquids and gases, and the properties that tell materials apart. This is the child’s first chemistry.

Chapter 7: Forms of Energy and Energy Transfer

  • Forms of Energy and Energy Transfer (p. 65)

Why it helps: Heat, light, sound and movement as forms of energy, and how energy moves from one place to another.

Chapter 8: Force and Simple Machines

  • Force and Simple Machines (p. 79)

Why it helps: Pushes, pulls and the machines (levers, pulleys, ramps) that make work easier. A hands-on chapter that suits home experiments.

Chapter 9: Technology in Everyday Life

  • Technology in Everyday Life (p. 97)

Why it helps: How technology has changed the way we live, learn and travel, and the questions it raises.

Chapter 10: Earth and Its Resources

  • Earth and Its Resources (p. 107)

Why it helps: Water, soil, air and minerals, and why we must use them carefully.

Chapter 11: Earth in the Solar System

  • Earth in the Solar System (p. 117)

Why it helps: The Sun, the planets and the Moon, and Earth’s place among them. The book ends on the largest scale of all, and the cover astronaut is a hint of where it is going.
