About this book

Handwriting Hunt, Book 2 is the Class 2 English handwriting practice book on the Allied School list for the 2027-28 session. It carries the TLR (Teaching Learning Resources) mark at the bottom of its green and white cover, where two children are watering a pencil that has grown into a tree.

Good handwriting is not about copying letters until the page is full. It starts with how a child holds a pencil, how they sit, and which strokes make up each letter. Book 2 puts that first: before any practice page, its introduction explains exactly how to write well.

What the introduction teaches (the only pages we could photograph)

Handwriting Hunt II, says its introduction, is for students to practise handwriting exercises, with the importance placed on letter formation and on building patterns of words and sentences. It uses a pre-cursive font, which is a step towards joined-up handwriting. The introduction then lists three characteristics of good handwriting:

  • Basic movements. The five strokes that every letter is built from: a sloped down stroke, a sloped anticlockwise movement, a horizontal and down stroke, a sloped clockwise movement and a diagonal movement. The book says these strokes are the foundation of forming letters, and can be made smaller or larger for lower and upper case.
  • An accurate pencil grip. Holding a pencil and gripping it are different things. The book advises holding the pencil about 2 cm from the point (2 to 3 cm for left-handed children) and shows correct and incorrect grips in pictures, with the thumb, index finger and middle finger doing the work. A teacher should remind students of the grip at the start of each handwriting session.
  • Sitting posture. Sit upright and comfortable, with a picture of the right way (green tick) and the wrong way (red cross). The book also suggests stretching and relaxing the arms and fingers from time to time, to reduce tiredness.

About the contents

We have photographed the introduction but not a contents page, and we would rather say so than guess the practice pages. The introduction makes clear that the book moves from strokes to letters to words and sentences. If you need the exact page list before you order, message us on WhatsApp and we will check our copy and reply.

Why handwriting practice matters in Class 2

By Class 2 a child is writing a great deal, and habits formed now are hard to change later. Practising formation, spacing and posture in a dedicated book gives a steady routine, and a child who forms letters correctly writes faster and tires less. Parents can see progress by comparing the first and last pages of the book.

A short handwriting routine for home

Ten minutes is enough. Start with the five basic strokes in the air, then trace each on paper, then write the letter. Check the grip and posture at the start, as the book advises, and end with one line written as neatly as possible. Doing this four or five days a week is more effective than one long weekend session.

Who, when, where and how

Whom: Class 2 students at Allied Schools (about seven years old). When: through the 2027-28 session, ten minutes a day is better than an hour a week. Where: at a desk with a good light. How: check the pencil grip and posture before every session, as the book itself recommends.
