About this book

English Language Ladder is the Grade 2 English coursebook used in Allied Schools, the school system run as a project of the Punjab Group of Colleges. It is published by AEP (arvo education press) and, as the cover says, is based on the Single National Curriculum 2020. A Class 2 child meets it in the classroom from the first week of the session, so parents who want the right edition on the desk from day one order it here, together with the rest of the Class 2 list.

The cover is worth a mention because it tells you how the book thinks. It shows a school picnic on a green lawn, with five children sharing fruit and juice – one of them a girl in a wheelchair, with a classmate standing behind her – while Arvo, the robot mascot of the series, peeks over the title. The units inside follow the same spirit: English is taught through stories about values, community and the environment, not through disconnected exercises.

What is inside: five units and a review

  • Unit 1 (page 1) – Ethics and Values: The Honesty and Truthfulness of Hazrat Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). Moral character and the difference between right and wrong; reading work covers pre-reading, reading with accuracy and expression, sight words, answering questions and using punctuation cues.
  • Unit 2 (page 15) – Recycle and Reuse: Journey of a Juice Carton. Environmental education and why biodegradable products matter; reading work covers punctuation cues, word endings, grade-level word analysis, and pulling information from charts and diagrams.
  • Unit 3 (page 30) – Living in Harmony: The Story of Two Stubborn Goats. Peaceful living through making friends, sharing, co-operating and collaborating; reading work covers using a dictionary, learning from visuals, story settings and characters, predicting events and recognising prose.
  • Unit 4 (page 44) – Citizenship: Following Rules and Regulation. Following classroom rules, keeping the classroom clean and not littering or damaging school and public property; reading work covers the question words (what, where, when, who, why), dictionary use for spelling and meaning, and recognising drama as a text type.
  • Unit 5 (page 56) – Manners (Poem). Life skills and good habits; reading work covers rhythm in poems and songs, sentence meaning, giving an opinion on a text and recognising sentence features.
  • Review of Units 1 to 5 (page 66)

Vocabulary, speaking and writing in every unit

Alongside the reading passages, each unit carries a grammar and vocabulary strand, an oral communication strand and a writing strand, which is what turns the book from a reader into a full English course. In the early units children work on dictation, a word wall, classifying naming words, question words, end marks and dictionary use. Unit 2 turns to long vowel sounds, regular plurals and the choice between a and an. Unit 3 adds adjectives, including comparatives and superlatives; Unit 4 covers subject pronouns with verbs (he is, they are, I am), sorting action, naming and describing words, and answering simple WH-questions; Unit 5 covers the articles a, an and the, adverbs ending in -ly, and capital letters for days and months.

Speaking is treated as a skill of its own: verbal and non-verbal communication, listening and responding, role play, correct pronunciation, asking questions for clarity, taking turns, sharing experiences and noticing stress and intonation. Writing grows step by step, from capital letters and simple sentences in Unit 1, through spelling short and long vowel sounds and filling in a simple paragraph, to completing speech bubbles and cartoon strips in Unit 4 and writing a short guided rhyming poem in Unit 5.

Who it is for and why it helps

This is the English book for a Class 2 student at an Allied School, usually six or seven years old. At that age the shift from copying words to composing sentences is the whole point of the year, and the guided steps here – fill in, complete, then write – give a child something to lean on. Parents will also find the values units useful at home, since each one ends in something a child can talk about at the dinner table.
