About this book

Count & Conquer, Book 2, is the mathematics textbook for Class 2 in the Allied Schools list. It is published by AEP | arvo education press and, as its cover states, is based on the Single National Curriculum 2020. It is a substantial book – the statistics chapter alone runs to page 288 – and it is the main maths book a Class 2 student at an Allied School works from all year.

The cover shows a sunny playground where every object is doing maths. A girl slides down a red slide, another balances across stepping stones shaped like cylinders and cubes, a boy in a red T-shirt fits a cube into a shape sorter, and a boy in a brown kurta holds a block marked 3 next to wooden blocks laid out as 5 × 3 = 15. It is a fair preview of the book: numbers, shapes and operations are taught through things a seven-year-old can picture.

Chapters listed on the contents pages

  • Chapter 1 – Whole Numbers (pages 1-26): counting up to 99 in words, three-digit numbers up to 999, place value in hundreds, tens and ones, comparing and ordering three-digit numbers, rounding to the nearest ten, ordinal numbers and Roman numerals up to 12.
  • Chapter 2 – Addition (pages 27-51): addition facts to 100, then three-digit numbers added to one-digit numbers, tens and two-digit numbers, each both with and without regrouping.
  • Chapter 5 – Multiplication (pages 95-131): even and odd numbers, counting and writing in 3s, 4s, 5s, 10s and 100s, multiplication as repeated addition, multiplication statements, multiplying in any order, multiplying a two-digit number by a one-digit number using a grid, multiplying by 0 and 1, and real-world word problems.
  • Chapter 6 – Division (pages 132-151): division as repeated subtraction, division on a number line, why division cannot be done in any order, and dividing a one-digit number by a one-digit number.
  • Measurement (continuing to page 228): adding and subtracting lengths, then measuring, comparing and adding or subtracting mass and capacity, followed by temperature (measuring, comparing and ordering), and perimeter and area.
  • Chapter 10 – Time (pages 229-252): the analogue clock, the digital clock, two ways to tell time, intervals of time, the calendar and the Islamic calendar.
  • Chapter 11 – Geometry (pages 253-267): two-dimensional shapes, movement and turns, and straight, curved, horizontal, vertical, parallel and perpendicular lines.
  • Chapter 12 – Statistics and Probability (pages 268-288): tally charts, pictographs, bar graphs and probability.

The book has further chapters (numbers 3 and 4, between pages 52 and 94, and numbers 7 and 8, between page 152 and the start of measurement) that are not shown on the contents pages in our photographs. If you need the full list for planning, message us on WhatsApp and we will confirm it before you order.

Why the topic order suits Class 2

The book builds arithmetic in the order children actually meet it. Place value comes first, because every later chapter depends on understanding hundreds, tens and ones. Addition follows, with each case shown first without regrouping and then with it, so the harder step is never met cold. Multiplication is presented as repeated addition and counting in steps, and division as repeated subtraction and number-line jumps – connecting each new operation to the one before. The later chapters then apply that number sense to the real world: how heavy, how much, how hot, what time it is, what shape, and how to read a chart.

Real-world word problems in the multiplication chapter and the practical topics in measurement and time give parents easy ways to practise at home, whether that is telling the time on the kitchen clock or working out how many chairs are in three rows of four.
