About this book

Kinder Math-Stars, Introductory Level is the purple-covered Play Group maths activity book that Lahore Grammar School (LGS) families look for each year. The cover is a bright garden scene with three cheerful children, the numbers 1 to 4 among the flowers, a small owl mascot in the corner and a white box for the child’s name. It carries the Kifayat mark and the words ‘Pakistan Edition’, and the cover also shows Oldenbourg, Germany, which tells you the series started in a German classroom before it was adapted for Pakistan.

If your child is starting Play Group in the 2027-28 session, this is a book they will draw in, colour in and count in, not just read. Play Group maths is not about sums. It is about learning to look carefully, to sort things into groups, to recognise a circle or a square, and to understand that the number 3 means three of something. This book teaches exactly that, page by page, and its contents list shows how.

Full table of contents: three sections, page by page

The contents page groups the book into three parts. Every entry is given below exactly as printed, with the page number, and a note on what it builds.

Colour, sorting and matching

  • Colouring pictures (p. 2)
  • Matching pictues (as printed) (p. 4)
  • Drawing stripes (p. 6)
  • Sorting into groups (p. 8)

Why it helps: These first four lessons are the gentle start. Colouring within a picture builds control of the crayon, matching trains the eye to spot what is the same, drawing stripes is the first step to straight lines and handwriting, and sorting into groups is the idea behind all later counting and sets.

Shapes and bodies

  • Drawing circles (p. 19)
  • Drawing triangles (p. 29)
  • Drawing squares (p. 35)
  • Colour the shapes (p. 37)
  • Match the shapes (p. 38)
  • Drawing rectangles (p. 49)
  • Pretty patterns (p. 65)
  • Recognizing shapes (p. 66)
  • Drawing ovals (p. 71)
  • Recognizing shapes (p. 73)
  • Pretty Patterns (p. 77)

Why it helps: Five shapes are taught one by one: circle, triangle, square, rectangle and oval. The child draws each shape before they are asked to recognise it, which is how a hand and a memory learn together. The pretty-pattern pages train the eye to see what comes next, which is early algebra thinking.

Learning numbers

  • One to one mapping (p. 10)
  • Counting to 1 (p. 11)
  • Colour the twins (p. 14)
  • Counting to 2 (p. 15)
  • Counting to 3 (p. 23)
  • Counting upto 3 (p. 26)
  • Counting to 4 (p. 31)
  • Counting to 5 (p. 39)
  • Counting upto 5 (p. 42)
  • Counting to 6 (p. 43)
  • Count and match (p. 46)
  • Count the dice (p. 47)
  • Counting upto 6 (p. 48)
  • Counting to 7 (p. 51)
  • Counting to 8 (p. 55)
  • Counting upto 8 (p. 57)
  • Colour by numbers (p. 58)
  • Counting to 9 (p. 59)
  • Counting upto 9 (p. 62)
  • Counting to 10 (p. 67)
  • Counting upto 10 (p. 69)
  • Dot to dot (p. 70)

Why it helps: ‘One to one mapping’ comes first because it is the most important idea in early maths: one object for one number word. After that each number from 1 to 10 gets its own pages, usually a ‘Counting to’ page that introduces the number and a ‘Counting upto’ page that revises everything up to it. Count the dice, colour by numbers and dot to dot add play so that practice never feels like work.

What the book is, and why it suits Play Group

This is an activity book, a book to write in. It works well for three-year-olds because each page asks for one clear thing: colour this, match that, trace this shape, count these. The contents list shows a steady pace, with the first ten numbers spread over about sixty pages rather than rushed. Parents can see at a glance what their child has done, which makes it easy to praise specific progress, such as ‘you drew the triangle on your own today’.

How to use it at home

A few minutes a day works better than a long session once a week:

  • Let your child choose the crayon, then do one page together.
  • Say the number or shape name aloud while they work, and ask them to repeat it.
  • Use real objects: three biscuits, four spoons, a round plate, a square tile.
  • Keep finished pages: they are the best record of progress to show a teacher.
  • Stop when attention fades; Play Group children need short, happy sessions.

Who, when, where and why

Whom: Play Group children (about three years old) and the adult who sits with them. When: through the 2027-28 session, a page or two at a time. Where: at school and at the kitchen table. Why: to build the pre-number skills (sorting, matching, shapes, one-to-one counting) that every later maths book depends on. Lahore Grammar School campuses follow almost the same book list, but a few follow their own for some subjects. Send us your child’s campus on WhatsApp and we confirm this title first.
