World Around Us – Beginners is the general knowledge book for the Prep class (the Beginners level) of The Smart School, ‘A Project of The City School’. The bright sky-blue cover shows children in hard hats and overalls busy around a giant globe: one measures it, one sits on top with a hammer, one climbs a ladder with a clipboard, one paints with a brush and one pulls a cart of paint. The banner at the bottom says it is aligned with the Single National Curriculum 2020.
It is a book about the world a five-year-old can see: the family, the home, the neighbourhood, plants, animals, weather. For the 2027-28 session, it helps parents of The Smart School Prep students to get the right edition and gives children a first, friendly introduction to science and social studies.
Full table of contents: 15 chapters, page by page
The contents page lists 15 chapters with their page ranges (99 pages in all). Every chapter is given below as printed, with a note on what it gives a Prep student.
Chapters 1 to 4: me, my family and my country
- 1. Family (pp. 1-6)
- 2. Healthy Habits (pp. 7-20)
- 3. People and Places Around Us (pp. 21-24)
- 4. My Homeland (pp. 25-30)
Why it helps: The book starts with the child: their family, their body and health, the people and places near them, and their country. Healthy Habits is the longest of the early chapters (14 pages) because habits formed now last.
Chapters 5 to 7: needs, travel and communication
- 5. Basic Needs of Life (pp. 31-34)
- 6. Transport (pp. 35-38)
- 7. Communication (pp. 39-42)
Why it helps: Food, water, shelter, then how people travel and how they talk to each other. These are the first ideas of society that a five-year-old can follow.
Chapters 8 to 10: living things
- 8. Living and Non-Living Things (pp. 43-48)
- 9. Plants (pp. 49-54)
- 10. Animals (pp. 55-66)
Why it helps: Sorting living from non-living is the first step in science. Plants and animals follow, with animals given the most room (12 pages) because children love them.
Chapters 11 to 13: the earth around us
- 11. Landforms (pp. 67-72)
- 12. Natural Resources (pp. 73-78)
- 13. Environment (pp. 79-84)
Why it helps: Hills, rivers and plains; water, air and soil; and why we must look after the environment. They give Prep children their first sense of geography and responsibility.
Chapters 14 and 15: technology and weather
- 14. Technology (pp. 85-92)
- 15. Weather and Season (pp. 93-99)
Why it helps: The book finishes with the technology children see around them and with the weather and seasons, topics that are easy to observe at home.
Why a Prep child needs this book
At five, children learn best by talking about what they can see. This book follows that rule. Each chapter is short (4 to 14 pages), so a topic can be covered in a week. The order moves outward from the child to the home, the country and the world, which is how a young mind builds a map of where it lives.
