Urdu (Play Group) is the Urdu alphabet book on the Allied School Play Group list for the 2027-28 session. The cover shows the title in Urdu on a yellow banner, a smiling sun, a tree with a green crown, a pencil and a magnifying glass, and Urdu letters floating in circles around it.
Urdu has 38 letters in this book’s count, and a child has to meet every one of them. This book gives each letter its own two pages, so that in the first term a Play Group child can see a letter, say it, trace it and spot it in a picture. The contents page lists them in the order of the alphabet, with page numbers.
Full table of contents: 38 letters, page by page
The contents page (Fehrist) is printed in Urdu in a table of serial number, title and page. Every title reads ‘Harf … ka taaruf’ (introduction of the letter …). The letters are given below in Roman Urdu, in book order.
Letters 1 to 10
- 1. Alif (pp. 01-02)
- 2. Alif-Madda (Aa) (pp. 03-04)
- 3. Bay (pp. 05-06)
- 4. Pay (pp. 07-08)
- 5. Tay (pp. 09-10)
- 6. Ttay (pp. 11-12)
- 7. Say (pp. 13-14)
- 8. Jeem (pp. 15-16)
- 9. Chay (pp. 17-18)
- 10. Hay (bari Hay) (pp. 19-20)
Why it helps: The book begins with Alif and Alif-Madda, the simplest shapes, and then moves through the Bay family (Bay, Pay, Tay, Ttay, Say), which differ only in their dots, so that a child sees the pattern. The Jeem family follows.
Letters 11 to 20
- 11. Khay (pp. 21-22)
- 12. Daal (pp. 23-24)
- 13. Ddaal (pp. 25-26)
- 14. Zaal (pp. 27-28)
- 15. Raay (pp. 29-30)
- 16. Rray (pp. 31-32)
- 17. Zay (pp. 33-34)
- 18. Zhay (pp. 35-36)
- 19. Seen (pp. 37-38)
- 20. Sheen (pp. 39-40)
Why it helps: Daal, Ddaal and Zaal, and Raay, Rray, Zay and Zhay, are taught as families too. Seeing similar letters one after another teaches children to look for the small differences that change a letter’s sound.
Letters 21 to 30
- 21. Suad (pp. 41-42)
- 22. Zuad (pp. 43-44)
- 23. Toay (pp. 45-46)
- 24. Zoay (pp. 47-48)
- 25. Ain (pp. 49-50)
- 26. Ghain (pp. 51-52)
- 27. Fay (pp. 53-54)
- 28. Qaaf (pp. 55-56)
- 29. Kaaf (pp. 57-58)
- 30. Gaaf (pp. 59-60)
Why it helps: The heavier letters of Arabic origin come in the middle of the book, once the child has gained confidence with the simpler ones, followed by Fay, Qaaf, Kaaf and Gaaf.
Letters 31 to 38
- 31. Laam (pp. 61-62)
- 32. Meem (pp. 63-64)
- 33. Noon (pp. 65-66)
- 34. Waaw (pp. 67-68)
- 35. Hay (gol Hay) (pp. 69-70)
- 36. Yay (choti Yay) (pp. 71-72)
- 37. Bari Yay (pp. 73-74)
- 38. A final Yay-form letter (the printed label is hard to read in our photograph) (p. 75)
Why it helps: The alphabet ends with Laam, Meem, Noon, Waaw, Hay and the two Yays. The last entry sits on a single page, 75, closing the book.
Why every letter gets two pages
At three years old, repetition is learning. Two pages per letter give room to meet the letter, trace its shape and look at pictures of words that start with it. Because the book follows the standard alphabet order, it matches what a teacher will say in class, and a parent can follow along even if they learned a slightly different order.
Making letter practice fun
Trace each letter in sand, flour or on a steamed-up window before writing it. Find the letter on a signboard or in a newspaper. Say the letter’s sound and name, then think of one word that starts with it. Keep the sessions short and stop when the child’s interest fades.
Who, when, where and how
Whom: Play Group students at Allied Schools (about three years old) and the adult who sits with them. When: through the 2027-28 session. Where: at school and at home. How: say the letter’s name and sound, trace it in the air and then on the page, and find the letter in a newspaper or on a sign. Titles here are in Roman Urdu; the book itself is printed in Urdu.
