About this book

The World Around Us, Play Group is the general knowledge book on the Allied School Play Group list for the 2027-28 session. The cover is a sky-blue page with the title in white and a purple banner reading Playgroup, over a circle of the Earth held in two hands, with giraffes, trees and other animals on top of it.

A three-year-old’s world is small and very close: me, my body, my family, my house. This book starts exactly there and widens a little with each topic, until it reaches animals, transport and the community. It has 14 topics and, at the end, eight sticker sheets, which make learning feel like play.

Full table of contents: 14 topics and 8 sticker sheets

Every topic is listed as printed, with the pages it covers, followed by a note on what it gives a three-year-old.

About me and my home

  • 1. Myself (pp. 01-02)
  • 2. My Body (pp. 03-05)
  • 3. My Family (pp. 06-07)
  • 4. My House (pp. 08-12)

Why it helps: The first four topics are the child’s own life: their name and self, the parts of their body, the people in their family and the rooms in their house. Starting with the familiar gives a nervous child confidence.

Time, weather and places

  • 5. Seasons (pp. 13-18)
  • 6. Weather (p. 19)
  • 7. In a Day (pp. 20-22)
  • 8. Places (pp. 23-28)

Why it helps: Seasons get six pages because a child can see them out of the window. In a Day introduces morning, afternoon and night, and Places introduces the places in a neighbourhood, from shop to school.

Animals, feelings and food

  • 9. Animals (pp. 29-39)
  • 10. Feelings (pp. 40-41)
  • 11. Food (pp. 42-43)

Why it helps: Animals are the longest topic, with eleven pages, as they are every child’s favourite. Feelings gives a child words for being happy, sad or angry, and Food talks about what we eat.

Moving around, community and senses

  • 12. Transport (pp. 44-49)
  • 13. My Community (pp. 50-51)
  • 14. Senses (pp. 52-53)

Why it helps: Transport covers the ways people travel, My Community introduces the people and places around the child, and Senses (sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch) rounds off the topics.

Sticker sheets 1 to 8

  • 15. Stickersheet 1 (p. 54)
  • 16. Stickersheet 2 (p. 55)
  • 17. Stickersheet 3 (p. 56)
  • 18. Stickersheet 4 (p. 57)
  • 19. Stickersheet 5 (p. 58)
  • 20. Stickersheet 6 (p. 59)
  • 21. Stickersheet 7 (p. 60)
  • 22. Stickersheet 8 (p. 61)

Why it helps: Eight pages of stickers at the back let a child stick the right picture in the right place, which is a way to check what they have learned while keeping their small hands busy.

Why a general knowledge book for Play Group

Before a child can read much, they can already talk about the world. A picture-led book of familiar topics builds vocabulary in both English and Urdu at home, and gives the teacher a topic for every week. Because the topics repeat in higher classes (the Prep and Nursery versions of The World Around Us), a Play Group child already knows the pattern when they move up.

Turning the topics into everyday talk

Each topic can be a conversation on the way to school: name the seasons, the weather today, the animals you can see, and the transport on the road. Because the topics are about the child’s own world, no special preparation is needed, only attention and a few questions.

Who, when, where and how

Whom: Play Group students at Allied Schools (about three years old) and the adult who sits with them. When: through the 2027-28 session. Where: at school and on walks. How: pick one topic a week, talk about it in your own language, and use the stickers as a reward.

Frequently asked questions

How many topics does it have?
Fourteen, plus eight sticker sheets.

Is it the same as the Prep book?

Yes, the last eight pages are sticker sheets.
