The Language Expedition, Class 5 is the main English coursebook for Class 5 at The Educators (a project of Beaconhouse). It is published by Oxford and written by Nicholas Horsburgh and Claire Horsburgh, and it belongs to the TE Series. The cover shows two children cycling along a mountain trail past signposts marked Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing, with Creativity and Critical Thinking on a second post. That picture is a fair summary of the book: English learned as a journey through all four skills, not as a pile of separate exercises.
Please note: this is the Textbook. The Language Expedition Workbook (Class 5) is a separate book that we also stock. Check your child’s school list to see whether it asks for the textbook, the workbook, or both.
Who it is for
It is written for Class 5 students at The Educators schools, usually ten- and eleven-year-olds, and for the parents and tutors who help them at home. Class 5 is the year reading has to become reading for meaning, and this book is designed around that shift.
What the book is built around
- Varied reading material. Passages are chosen to widen vocabulary: new stories, factual accounts, contemporary fiction and traditional folk stories.
- Reading for understanding and inference. Questions are factual, inferential and interpretive, so children practise finding an answer in the text and also working out what the text implies.
- Moral and ethical values. Tolerance and respect across cultures are core themes, and values are woven into the reading rather than added as a separate lesson.
- Critical thinking. Activities ask children to analyse what they read, not just repeat it.
- Writing Workshop. Guided support for both functional writing and creative writing, with exercises that help a child put their thoughts across clearly.
- Communicative methodology. The series teaches language through literature, so that children build an understanding of English they can use in real conversations.
Meet the Language Explorers
Two characters, Zunera and Usman, guide the child through every unit. Zunera helps with the meanings of new and difficult words. Usman sets thinking challenges that make the child look harder at what they have read. Together they give the book a friendly voice, and give a parent an easy way to see what each unit is asking of the child.
Units and reading pieces
The companion workbook’s contents page lists the reading pieces that go with each of the textbook’s nine units. They include stories and adventures such as Robinson Crusoe, Karate Parrot and Uncle Shams. Tales with a lesson include Sour Grapes, Try Again and The Message of Forgiveness. Poems include Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening, The Road Not Taken and Loveliest of Trees, the Cherry Now. The later units move to real-world topics: Farming in Pakistan, The Problem with Plastic, The Olympic Games and Thinking About Role Models.
A child who moves from a poem to a folk tale to a piece about plastic waste practises several kinds of reading in one term, which is what a Class 5 comprehension paper asks for.
