Phonics, Stage 1 (Play Group) is the phonics book on the Allied School Play Group list for the 2027-28 session. The cover shows a fox in an orange hat curled up on a tree branch, with the letters d, b, c, a and e hanging among fruit and leaves, and the title Phonics, Playgroup, with the Stage 1 sign hanging from the branch.
Stage 1 is the starting point of Allied’s three-stage phonics course: Nursery uses Stage 2 and Prep uses Stage 3. In Stage 1 a child meets all 26 letters, one at a time, with two pages each, and a Letters Review to finish.
Full table of contents: letters a to z, a review and stickers
The contents page lists the letters in alphabetical order with their pages. (The printed numbering skips 17 in the right-hand column; we show the letters as printed.)
Letters a to m
- Letter a (pp. 01-02)
- Letter b (pp. 03-04)
- Letter c (pp. 05-06)
- Letter d (pp. 07-08)
- Letter e (pp. 09-10)
- Letter f (pp. 11-12)
- Letter g (pp. 13-14)
- Letter h (pp. 15-16)
- Letter i (pp. 17-18)
- Letter j (pp. 19-20)
- Letter k (pp. 21-22)
- Letter l (pp. 23-24)
- Letter m (pp. 25-26)
Why it helps: The first half of the alphabet takes 26 pages. Each letter gets two pages, enough for a child to see the letter, say its sound and trace it.
Letters n to z
- Letter n (pp. 27-28)
- Letter o (pp. 29-30)
- Letter p (pp. 31-32)
- Letter q (pp. 33-34)
- Letter r (pp. 35-36)
- Letter s (pp. 37-38)
- Letter t (pp. 39-40)
- Letter u (pp. 41-42)
- Letter v (pp. 43-44)
- Letter w (pp. 45-46)
- Letter x (pp. 47-48)
- Letter y (pp. 49-50)
- Letter z (pp. 51-52)
Why it helps: The second half follows in the same pattern, so a child learns what to expect on every page. The routine itself becomes part of the learning.
Review and stickers
- Letters Review (pp. 53-55)
- Sticker sheets (pp. 56-58)
Why it helps: A three-page Letters Review lets a teacher check all 26 letters, and three sticker sheets give a reward at the end of the book.
The three stages of Allied phonics
Phonics Stage 1 is for Play Group, Stage 2 for Nursery and Stage 3 for Prep, so a child who starts here has the same format all the way through. If you also need the next stage, look for our Phonics Stage 2 (Nursery) and Phonics Stage 3 (Prep) listings.
Why phonics first
Phonics links letters to sounds, which is what reading depends on. In Play Group the goal is not reading; it is hearing the first sound in a word and linking it to a shape. This book does that for each letter in a calm, repeated routine.
Who, when, where and how
Whom: Play Group students at Allied Schools (about three years old) and the adult who sits with them. When: through the 2027-28 session. Where: at school and at home. How: say the sound (not the name) of the letter, trace it with a finger, then with a pencil, and find objects that start with that sound.
