About this book

Numbers is the Nursery maths book in the Allied Schools list. It is the book in which a three- or four-year-old works through the numerals 0 to 20 one at a time, and then goes on to count, sequence, compare and even add and subtract small numbers. It runs to 69 pages and 37 topics, and parents order it at the start of the Nursery year along with the rest of the school’s list.

The cover is a friendly meadow scene: the title Numbers in rainbow bubble letters, a wooden sign reading Nursery hanging beneath, and the numbers 5, 8 and 10 drawn as cartoon characters with eyes. A brown bear waves, a giraffe peeks out, a lion sits on a tree stump, and an elephant stands on the right with a baby monkey balancing on its head – so counting animals, and counting with animals, is part of the book from the front cover.

How the book is paced

The numbers from 0 to 10 get two pages each, which gives a small child room to trace the numeral, count matching objects and colour. From 11 to 20 the pace quickens to a page per number, on the sensible assumption that once a child has the idea of a numeral, repeating the routine is enough. That is followed by a block of counting, sequencing and backward counting, which are the skills teachers rely on before any addition begins.

The second half broadens the topic beyond numerals. Two-dimensional shapes take six pages, then a review, and pairs of ideas that young children find tricky – before and after, more and less, comparison – are each given their own short section. Addition and subtraction come late, only after this groundwork, and are short (three and two pages). The book closes with positions, measurement, time and the days of the week – the everyday maths a Nursery child will actually use.

Who it is for

The book is aimed at Nursery students in Allied Schools, around three to four years old, and at parents helping them practise at home. A pencil and coloured crayons are all a child needs. It is a numbers book rather than a general maths workbook, so if your Nursery list also includes write-and-wipe or practice books, they are separate titles.
