The Language Expedition Workbook for Class 5 is the supplementary reading companion to The Language Expedition, the English course used at The Educators (a project of Beaconhouse). It is published by Oxford and written by Nicholas Horsburgh and Claire Horsburgh. The cover says exactly what it is: Supplementary Reading Material, marked Workbook, with two children cycling along a mountain trail past signposts for Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.
Please note: this is the Workbook. The main Language Expedition Textbook (Class 5) is a separate book that we also stock. Check your child’s school list to see whether it asks for the workbook, the textbook, or both.
Who it is for
It is written for Class 5 students at The Educators schools, usually ten- and eleven-year-olds who are moving from learning to read towards reading for meaning. Parents and tutors will find it useful too. The contents page is organised by the numbered textbook units, so anyone helping with homework can find the right pages quickly.
What is inside: 9 units, 16 reading pieces
The workbook’s Detailed Contents page lists every piece under the textbook unit it belongs to, with its page number:

A mix of stories, poems and real-world topics
The list is more varied than a typical reader. It has stories and adventures (Robinson Crusoe, Karate Parrot, Uncle Shams), fables and tales with a lesson (Sour Grapes, Try Again, The Message of Forgiveness), and poems, including Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening, The Road Not Taken and Loveliest of Trees, the Cherry Now. The last few units turn to factual topics closer to home: Farming in Pakistan, The Problem with Plastic, The Olympic Games and, to close, Thinking About Role Models.
This range matters at Class 5. A child who reads a poem, a fable and a piece about plastic waste in the same term practises three different ways of reading, and that is exactly what a comprehension test asks for.
How it fits the series
The Language Expedition series is built around four skills, listening, speaking, reading and writing, with creativity and critical thinking as the two paths that run through them. The workbook gives Class 5 students extra reading practice for each textbook unit, so what is read in class can be revisited at home.
