Part I: Grammar (15 units)
The grammar section opens with parts of speech, then moves into a detailed study of nouns and articles – common, proper, material, concrete, abstract, collective and compound nouns, how abstract nouns are formed using suffixes, singular and plural forms (including plurals of compound nouns), noun gender, countable and uncountable nouns, possessive nouns, and using quantifiers correctly with each (some, few, little, many, much, no, both, all, each, every). Pronouns are covered in similar depth: demonstrative, personal, interrogative, reciprocal and indefinite pronouns, plus relative pronouns and relative clauses.
The book then works through kinds of adjectives (quality, quantity, number and proper adjectives, plus compound adjectives), their degrees (positive, comparative and superlative, both regular and irregular), and how adjectives are formed using prefixes and suffixes, before covering noun phrases and adjective phrases. A unit on verbs distinguishes main verbs from helping verbs and covers transitive, intransitive and auxiliary verbs along with direct and indirect objects, followed by gerunds, infinitives and present participles, and then adverbs and adverb phrases (including how adverbs are formed).
Prepositions of position, time, movement and direction (including “since” and “for”) lead into a full unit on conjunctions – coordinating, subordinating and correlative – with real example pairs (and/too/as well; then/while/before; because/as/for; so that/in order to/so as to; where/wherever; either…or/neither…nor) and the distinction between coordination and subordination in compound versus complex sentences. Punctuation and capitalisation covers parentheses, hyphens, quotation marks, exclamation marks, full stops and apostrophes, alongside recognising faulty punctuation.
The grammar section closes with sentence structure and the four sentence types (declarative, exclamatory, interrogative and imperative), zero and first conditional sentences, modal verbs (can/cannot, may/may not, should, must, shall, will, could, might) used to express ability, permission, requests, prohibition, doubt and obligation, and direct versus indirect speech, including how tense shifts from present to past in reported simple sentences.
Part II: Translation
The translation section works by practising each grammar point through Urdu-to-English sentence translation: the different forms of the verb “be” (is, am, was, were), correct use of “it” and “there,” the correct use of “has,” “have” and “had,” forming questions with question words, and all eight tense forms – Present Indefinite, Present Continuous, Present Perfect, Past Indefinite, Past Continuous, Past Perfect, Future Indefinite and Future Continuous – plus active and passive voice in the present, past and future tenses.
Part III: Reading Comprehension
A set of reading comprehension passages develops reading skills through direct questions on each text.
Part IV: Written Composition
The composition section teaches five writing formats in turn: paragraph writing (topic sentences and supporting details, correct capitalisation, punctuation and spelling), essay writing (building a multi-paragraph structure around a given topic), story writing (developing a story around a given topic or moral), informal letter writing (with proper salutations and closings), and application writing. The book closes with a reference table of the three forms of verbs, full answer keys, and a list of commonly confused words.
