Expressions English Multiskill Coursebook is Allied School’s Class 6 English coursebook, built on the Single National Curriculum 2022. It is a skills coursebook, not a literature anthology – see Expressions English Literature Reader (also Class 6, Allied School) for the separate short-story and poetry reader.
The book is organised around themed units – festivals and national pride, environmental awareness, peaceful co-existence, anecdote writing, patience and the life of the Holy Prophet, role models, healthy living, personal ethics and values, personality, and a closing unit on classroom debate and paragraph writing – and each unit works through the same five skill areas: reading, grammar, vocabulary, listening & speaking, and writing.
Reading Comprehension Skills
Across the units, students practise a full toolkit of reading strategies: skimming a passage for its general idea and inferring the main theme; scanning text to answer short, specific questions; distinguishing between what a text clearly states and what it only implies; using pre-reading strategies to predict a text’s content from its title or images; applying while-reading strategies (like tracking key words, verbs and tenses) to make inferences; and using post-reading strategies to connect a text to their own knowledge and opinions. Students also learn to identify literary genres (poetry, prose, drama), recognise a text’s structure and purpose, and locate information within visual formats like a class timetable.
Grammar
Grammar topics build progressively across the book: collective, concrete and abstract nouns; plural nouns that keep a singular form (like “scissors”); the difference between main verbs and helping verbs; and a full run through the tense system – Simple Present, Present Perfect, Present Continuous, Past Continuous, Past Perfect, and Simple Future. Later units cover apostrophes with singular and plural words (including possessive apostrophes), the formation and degrees of adjectives (positive, comparative and superlative, both regular and irregular), binomial word pairs like “neat and tidy,” prepositions of time, position, movement and direction (including “since” and “for”), phrases and clauses, post-modifiers, phrasal verbs, adverb phrases, gerunds and participles, and the four basic English sentence patterns (Subject-Verb-Object, Subject-Verb-Adjective, Subject-Verb-Adverb and Subject-Verb-Noun).
Vocabulary
Vocabulary work runs throughout: finding antonyms and synonyms, choosing the correct meaning of a word from context, and building topic vocabulary tied to each unit’s theme, including health and safety terms for the drug-education unit.
Listening & Speaking
Speaking and listening tasks include taking on the role of a group leader in a discussion, reporting a news story aloud, using language appropriately for different social purposes, holding a classroom debate, and practising attentive-listening etiquette such as turn-taking.
Writing
Writing instruction moves from short forms to longer ones: dialogue writing, free-writing and personal anecdotes, describing people, opinion writing, persuasive writing, summary writing, and finally multi-paragraph writing on a single topic using prewriting strategies like brainstorming and mind-mapping. Editing and proofreading skills – checking spelling, punctuation and capitalisation – are taught as a distinct skill throughout, alongside spelling rules such as doubling a final consonant before adding “-ing” and using suffixes like “-tious” and “-cious” correctly.
