Art & Drawing (B) is the Nursery creative-arts book from Allied Pre Schools, a project of the Punjab Group of Colleges. It is not a book to read; it is a book to do. Across 38 pages it gives a three- or four-year-old a run of short, achievable activities – a maze to follow, lines to trace, shapes to colour, a fruit to print – so that the year in Nursery includes a steady routine of holding a crayon, using a fingertip and tearing paper, not just learning letters and numbers.
The cover shows what to expect. A laughing boy hugs a giant red pencil with a pink eraser and a girl holds an oversized paintbrush dripping with red paint, in a studio whose golden walls are covered with a bumblebee, a smiling stick-figure portrait and a paper flower. A painted clay pot and a cup of brushes and coloured pencils sit in the corners. Everything in the picture is something a child in the book will make.

What children practise
Read the skill names down the contents page and the pattern is clear. Tracing and scribble patterns build the pencil control that later becomes handwriting. Colouring teaches children to stay in a shape. The printing activities – with a thumb, a ladyfinger, a thread and a cucumber – are fun, but they also train the hand and the eye and introduce the idea that everyday objects can make art. Tearing, pasting and paper craft develop the small finger muscles, and the recycling and string-painting pages encourage creativity with things found at home.
The book finishes on a personal note: an Eid card and a Mother’s Day card that a child can hand to someone. That is a small thing, but for a Nursery child, making something for family is often the most memorable page of the year.
Who it is for
This is the (B) title of the Nursery art series used at Allied Pre Schools, for children of roughly three to four years old and for parents and teachers planning their supplies. If your school’s list names a different Art & Drawing title, for example an (A) book, that is a separate book, so check the list before you order. You will need crayons or colour pencils, paint, glue and paper for the printing and pasting pages.
